Just a reminder that any photo RETAKE orders are due Friday please.

The boy’s volleyball team had a fantastic day at the Area tournament yesterday.  They started strong winning a game against Connaught.  Then by the end of the day they ramped it up and played two amazing games against the top team, St. Mary’s taking a game from them.  The team displayed excellent sportsmanship throughout the day.  Mrs. Baumgarten, Mr. Edwards and Mrs. Degagne want to thank the team for an excellent season.  We are very proud of how much you have improved.  The boys would like to challenge the teachers and their captain Mrs. Winstone to a game next week.  The time will be announced.  Game on Mrs. Winstone!!!

Just a friendly reminder that Mr. Carson’s Roll Across Ontario fundraiser at the Pita Pit in Wasaga beach is tonight from 4-9 p.m. 20% of all the sales of food and beverage will be directly donated to Mr. Carson’s skate. Hope to see staff, students, and their families tonight. Mr. Carson thanks you for your support!

Yesterday the Intermediate Girls’ Basketball team competed in the Simcoe West Area Tournament held at CCI. The girls’ first game was against Connaught. They played a fantastic offensive and defensive game but in the end came up three baskets short of a victory.  In the final game against Admiral Collingwood the strongest team in the division the girls’ played an amazing defensive game and were able to hold off some of the top shooters in the West.  Mr. Osborn and Ms. Ewaskiw are very proud of the skill and sportsmanship that the girls’ displayed while representing our team.   We look forward to working with the grade 7 girls again next year and encourage the grade 8 girls to try out for the high school team next year.

Wednesday November 27, 2013

Today is Waste Free Wednesday. Thank you for helping the environment. Green Team go to Mr. Pinkerton’s room at 10:35.

As some of you may or may not know, next summer Mr. Carson is inline skating over 2200 km across the province of Ontario in an event called Roll Across Ontario. His net goal is to raise $20,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.

A fundraising evening is happening tomorrow night, Thursday the 28th, from 4-9 p.m. at Pita Pit on Mosley Street in Wasaga Beach. Through the evening, Pita Pit will donate 20% of all sales of food and beverage to Mr. Carson’s cancer fundraiser. So, come on out tomorrow night, bring your families, and enjoy a great dinner while helping to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. Mr. Carson looks forward to seeing staff, students and families there, and he thanks you for your support.

Attention Character Demonstration Team!  Please meet Mrs. Sutherland in Room 108 at Second Recess today for a short meeting.   See you soon!

Roll Across Ontario

Mr. Carson is continuing the legacy of his Canadian hero Terry Fox.  He intends to in-line skate across Ontario in hopes of raising $20,000 for cancer research.  Funds raised  from his Roll Across Ontario campaign will go to Canadian Cancer Society, which funds research, provides services in communities, and promotes early-detection cancer screening programs that help save lives every day.

We wanted you to know of a sponsor promotion that is happening with a local sponsor for his skate. On the last Thursday of every month from now until June (excluding December), and alternating each month between his Wasaga Beach and Collingwood locations, Malcolm McSorley from Pita Pit is donating 20% of the sales between 4-9 p.m. toward Roll Across Ontario. The first promotional evening is next Thursday, November 28th, from 4-9 p.m. at the Wasaga Beach location. So, if you are in the area, and are looking to pick up some dinner, or have a bite to eat before you head out to the Ladies Night event that night, visit Mr. Carson and the staff at Pita Pit on Mosley Street to help support my skate and the Canadian Cancer Society.

More events will be planned throughout the year including a great event here at Birchview in the spring.

James Carson will be strapping on his in-line skates next summer to raise money for cancer research. Lana Turcic-Brandau/Collingwood Enterprise-Bulletin

  •  The boys volleyball team played at Worsley last night.  They worked hard as a team and won the first set.  There were many excellent serves and lots of good volleys.  The boys, as always, were excellent team players and very positive.  Way to go boys!  There will be a quick meeting today at second break and a practice on Monday at second break.
  •   Yesterday the intermediate girls’ basketball team traveled to Byng in Stayner for their second game of the season.   Great defensive skills were shown by Taylor G, Kiley H. and Reece B.  Although the girls game up short to a powerful shooting team, everyone on the team showed significant improvement.   Mr. Osborn and Ms. Ewaskiw are proud of the girls and the fantastic sportsmanship they showed throughout the game.  Coaches Osborn and Ewaskiw will see you at 10:35 for our scheduled practice.

BIRCHVIEW DUNES GIVES BACK

We have two caring initiatives to give back to our Community this season of giving. No matter which Holiday Drive you can help out with you will make a difference to children in our community this holiday season.

TOY DRIVE

Birchview’s 4th Annual Toy Drive is now under way. We will be collecting donations from November 20th to November 29th. The items we collect will be donated through the Simcoe Paramedics Services Toy Drive. All donations will be distributed to local children and families in need by charitable organizations working in partnership with Simcoe County Paramedic Services.

Gift ideas include: toys, books, games, and gift cards. All donations need to be new and unwrapped.

OUR HOLIDAY BOX DRIVE

That’s right; our school is participating with communities in the surrounding area to help other children in need during the holidays. Our HolidayBox Drive will be collecting donations that will go towards the Children’s Aid Society until December 5th. We really hope that you can help us out with this endeavor. Here is how it works:

Our focus is children our age (7-8 years old). Of course any donations for infants up to teenagers are welcome as well.

Donations may include: clothing, toys, tooth brush, gloves, hats, scarves, pocket size lotions, travel games, school supplies (pens, pencils, lined paper, binders), flash lights, sporting goods, gift cards – Wal Mart, Shopper Drug Mart, Pizza, Movies etc).

 • Please ensure that any donations are in their original packaging

Thank you for supporting these very worthy causes, helping ensure that all children have a good Christmas this year. We will have boxes at the Ladies Night Out—One Stop Holiday Shop on Nov 28th

Giving Back to Our Community – Thanking Our Veterans

A number of classes created postcards and letters for over 40 veterans at a luncheon held for them at the Waterside Retirement Lodge this past Monday.

Last Thursday three veterans from the Waterside Retirement Lodge visited the school to pick up the student created cards and letters.  The three veterans from the Second World War visited a number of classes and answered questions from the students.  The staff at the Retirement Lodge decorated the room on Monday with all the letters and cards created by the Birchview students.

Thanks to the students in Mrs. Baumgarten’s class, Mr. Brook’s class, Mr. McLean’s class, and the students who have french with Madame Vaine.
