Waste Free Lunches

This Week and Every Wednesday for the Remainder of the Year

The best way for us to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill is to simply reduce how much waste we produce everyday.

For school-age children the bulk of the waste that they produce comes from their lunch. Today’s children are bringing lunches with most things processed and pre-packaged – they are convenient to pack, and seem like an inexpensive option at first glance, however, studies have shown that these foods are often lacking in nutrients when compared to home-made, fresh options, are more expensive, and tend to be wasted.

This is why schools are continually working to encourage children to bring waste-free lunches.  Not only does it reduce the amount of waste in the classrooms, it also helps to encourage healthier food choices and to reduce the costs to the families purchasing the lunch items.

Link to the SCDSB Waste Diversion Page (check out all the Environmental Initiatives)

Check out this resource for more on how and why it’s important to pack a waste-free lunch.

Earth Day ‘Swap and Shop’ April 22

Birchview Dunes will be holding a School-Wide Earth Day Swap and Shop on Monday, April 22. Students are asked to bring in gently-used, clean, – toys, games, movies, or books that they no longer want. (No stuffies please!)

All items must fit into a backpack. Please review that all items are school-age appropriate.

Items will be collected from Wed, April 17 to Fri, April 19.

On Monday, April 22nd students will have the opportunity to “shop” for items that they choose.  Each item brought in is worth one credit. Credits can be used to shop for items from the selection available.
