This Week at Birchview

What an exciting week!

Wasaga Hydro visited the school and gave an entertaining and educational presentation on safety.

The CCI jazz band visited yesterday and were simply awesome! Our own Mr.McLean joined in for a song.

Mrs Monahan’s grade 3 class and a number of grade 7 and 8 students visited Rogers TV on Wednesday to record a Holiday Show that will be repeated during the month of December. We will show their performances at an assembly (last week of December). Thanks to Mrs Hutchesson and Mr McLean for their leadership.

Congratulations to our junior girls basketball and intermediate boys volleyball teams for participating in the area tournament Wednesday. Thanks to coaches Ms Czaikowski, Mr Osborn, Ms Garvan, and Mrs Cameron.

Santa Claus Parade Thank You

A big thank you goes out to Edward and Linda Holley (Sturgeon Point Marina) for the use of the float and for safely driving the kids.

Richard and Darlene Schwan, Jamie and Brett Bartle, Alan and Mary Morrison and Paul Smith for all their work organizing, designing, constructing and cleaning up of the float.

Also to all the families who came out and braved the weather so that our vision could be pulled together.

Student Showcase – Gr. 5s create 3D patterns

Here’s a few student work samples from Mrs. Duit’s grade 5 class. Please note that this is the first Student Showcase posting with many more to come. The purpose is to celebrate student learning at Birchview and to share this work with the community. The learning goal and success criteria identify what the students are learning and specifically what they need to do to be successful.
Mrs. Duit’s students did a great job demonstrating their work and explaining how they created and extended their patterns.

Colouring Contest Winner – Keagan B.

Congratulations to Keagan B. for winning the Fire Dept Colouring Contest at Birchview Dunes.  Keagan enjoyed a ride in a fire truck this morning.  He went for lunch with two fire fighters at McDonalds.  After lunch he visited the new Fire Station.  He saw the first fire truck in Wasaga Beach.  The fire fighters also showed him their classroom, the lunchroom, the workout room, and all the fire fighter equipment.   Keagan was then driven back to the school in a fire truck.

Annual Toy Drive

Birchview is holding its 3rd Annual Christmas Toy Drive.  The toys are donated to the Wasaga Beach Paramedics and then re-distributed to families in our community who are in need.  We are asking students to bring in new toys, games, and books to donate.  Gift Cards are wonderful too.

The Spirit Crew will be collecting the toys Monday through Friday of this coming week.  Last year we donated over 400 toys as a school.  We are hoping to match or beat that goal this year.  If you are able, please send in something this week for the toy drive.

STEP – Student Emergency Preparedness Program (Junior Classes)

The grade 4, 5, 6 classes have been participating in STEP program this week (Tues, Wed, Thurs).

The program covers the 4 easy steps that need to be taken to be prepared for emergencies and disasters:

  • Know the Risks
  • Make a Plan
  • Prepare a Kit
  • Know what to do

STEP is a public education program offered by County of Simcoe Emergency Management Department.  It is designed to increase student safety by making them better prepared for emergencies and disasters. We would like to thank Mr. Heffernan, Training and Promotion Coordinator – County of Simcoe, Emergency Management Dept.  for providing this program to our students.

Students have the opportunity to enter a draw for a chance to win a Canadian Red Cross 72-Hour Disaster kit.

Remembrance Day Reflection

On Mr. Osborn’s chalkboard was written the word ‘PROUD’.  The grade 6 students told me they were so proud of how ALL the Birchview Dunes students participated in the school’s Remembrance Day Assembly.  They mentioned that the students demonstrated their respect by entering the gym quietly; softly singing O’Canada as Mackenzie B. played the piano; attentively watched and listened to the videos and student presentations; silently reflected during the playing of the Last Post and the moment of silence; and then quietly left the gym.

I mentioned to the students and staff during the morning announcements that the Remembrance Day assembly was awesome.  I shared that a number of parents approached myself and other staff telling us that they were so proud of all the students and that they were so glad that they attended the assembly.  They enjoyed all the student presentations and the videos were very touching.  I told the students to share our assembly with their families and to ask if they had relatives that served in the Canadian Armed Forces.

Below are some of the student artwork created to honour the men and women who served Canada in times of war, military conflict and peace.
